Up until August 2024 John led on providing assurance for cyber security as a Non-Executive Director (NED) on the Boards of NHS Digital and NHS England. He holds other non-executive director roles in the UK and Japan. As a NED with Nihon Cyber Defence, he is currently providing cyber security advice to the Japan Association team preparing for Expo 2025 in Osaka.

For his work in creating effective security partnerships for the London Olympics, he was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2012.
John was the Director of Incident Management at the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). He helped to establish the NCSC and led on nearly 800 major cyber incidents. These incidents included the WannaCry incident that impacted the NHS (and other organisations) in May 2017. For four years John was a senior cyber security advisor at McKinsey as well as being an advisor to the Qatari World Cup Committee.
During his 40 years of Government service, John specialised in operational delivery and strategic business change.
